Cemeteries

The Public Health Department controls and maintains the following cemeteries and cremations grounds:

1. St Georges/ Gebert / Western / Muslim Cemeteries, Les Salines (Tel: 2111822)

2. Eastern Cemetery, Roche Bois (Tel: 2403080)

3. Cremation Grounds at Tranquebar, Les Salines and Vallée des Prêtres

4. Crematorium at Les Salines.

5. Pailles Cemetery.

Burials as well as placing of dead bodies in vaults and cremations are effected by Burial Ground Attendants under the supervision of Health Inspectors after all formalities are completed.  The Health Inspectors posted at the Cemeteries also collect burial fees (re-opening of graves/vaults), fees for the purchase of new plots of ground, municipal vaults rental fees, cremation fees, etc.  They supervise the works of cemetery labourers responsible for the cleaning of the cemeteries (grass cutting, refuse collection, etc.).

Normal Opening Hours of Cemeteries

  • Monday to Saturday         -     6.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m.

 

  • Sunday                              -   8.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m.

Late night burials up to 10.30 p.m. may be acceded to at Muslim Cemetery.  The officer in charge of the cemetery should be informed before 5.30 p.m. on the same day.

 

Fees leviable for the purchase of land for graves or vaults, digging/re-opening of graves, construction of vault tombs and monuments,  cremation etc are as follows:

Purchase of  land for graves Rs
The price of any plot of land not exceeding 1 metre 83centimetres by 91 centimetres shall be 500
For any plot of land exceeding the above surface measurements, the price for additional requirement, which shall not exceed 15 centimetres in length, shall be 200
Purchase of land for vault Rs
The price of any plot of land not exceeding 3 metres 35 centimetres by 2 metres 13 centimetres shall be 5000
For any plot of land exceeding the above surface measurements, the price for every additional square centimetre or fraction of a centimeter shall be 50
Digging/re-opening of graves Rs
The price for digging of one private or common grave shall be 300

For construction of vault tombs and monuments the following rates shall be paid in addition to the price of the land:

3rd class Vault or tomb not exceeding 1 metre and 22 centimetresin height 1000

5th class Vault or tomb not exceeding 30 centimetres in height 500
6th class Simple gravestone place horizontally or vertically with inscription 375
7th class Tomb covered with plaster without a grave stone not exceeding 30 centimetres in height 250
8th class Grave board with inscription 75
A cross wood or iron - not exceeding 61 centimetres in height 50
A cross wood or iron exceeding 61 centimetres in height 75
For the construction of a subterranean vault, in addition 1000
Should such vault extend above the level of surrounding soil, the additional fee mentioned for vaults or tombs above the ground shall be: Rs
For an enclosure in plain boards (trellis or bars) of 61 centimetres in height 100
For an enclosure in plain boards of 91 centimetres in height 125
For an enclosure in plain boards of 1 metre and 22 centimetres in height 150
For 4-pillars in chains 100
For each additional pillar supporting chains 25
For all iron railings having not more than one metre in height 250
For an enclosure of stones 250
For the re-opening of a vault:  
All Classes 300
   

The above tariff shall be held to apply to the cemeteries wherever situated within the jurisdiction of the Council.

No fee shall be paid for digging of graves for burial of unclaimed dead bodies.

 

The following rates shall apply for the occupation of any vault erected by the Council in its cemeteries provided that a refundable deposit of Rs 3000 be paid as security.

Fees for cremation:

Cremation without coffin - Rupees 2000

Cremation with coffin      - Rupees 3000

 

No new graves are available for sale at St Georges, Western, Gebert and Eastern Cemeteries.

Documents to be produced for burial to the Officer in Charge of Cemetery:

  1. Proof of ownership of grave.
  2. Identity card of applicant.
  3. Burial Permit from Civil Status Office.

 

Documents to be produced to Inspector in Charge of Crematorium:

  1. Identity card of applicant.
  2. Cremation Permit from Sanitary Authority.

 

The management of cemeteries and cremation grounds are regulated by The Cemeteries Regulations 2011.
