SMART ISLANDS WORLD CONGRESS

Mr Mohammad Oumar KHOLEEGAN, Lord Mayor of Port Louis, participated in the first edition of the “SMART ISLANDS WORLD CONGRESS” held in Calvia, Mallorca on 20-21 April 2017.

There were participants from 70 islands world-wide. The Lord Mayor was among the 95 speakers of the congress.

Participating islands had the opportunity to promote initiatives and receive awards for development projects which make islands “smarter”. The six categories for awards were: Smart Islands, Urban Development, Smart Destination, Innovative Initiative, Sustainable Development and Cultural Innovation.

There were two initiatives presented for Mauritius. Initiative “Port Louis Smart City Concept Plan” highlighted the project of upgrading of Victoria and Immigration Bus Terminals and the project of Centralised Parking at Champ de Mars. Mauritius received the Urban Development Award for this initiative. Mauritius was also the second winner for the category “Innovative Initiative” for project “Moving towards a clean and green city – adoption of solar led street lighting” being implemented by the Council.

The Lord Mayor received the Urban Development Award.
